And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. BLACK HISTORY MONTH: AN INTERVIEW

When: Yearly

In 1926 Carter G. Woodson founded Black History Week. In 1976 during the American Bicentennial Celebration the week was expanded to the month of February. The purpose was to recognize contributions of African Americans. Q: Why is Black History Month significant? A: So, we can recognize the successes and accomplishments of a people who have not always been included in the mainstream of history.
Q: Who were your heroes growing up? A: My parents were #1 then the dads of my family. Also, men in the community: my coaches, my neighbors and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Q: What is the secret of the African-American church? A: Secret: Its preaching of the ‘Gospel’, teaching, and music. Church life is the fabric of our existence. It is where we can freely express ourselves in Christ.
There was more to this interview but limited space became an issue. I hope you take time to honor upon our African American Heritage and recognize this special month. – HBL
